Crypto Capital Gains Tax in Australia — 32.5% / 16.25%
Australia applies capital gains tax at your marginal rate and then discounts the gain by half when the asset has been held for at least twelve months. The estimator uses the 32.5% marginal band before the discount and 16.25% after it, which is the same figure reached by halving the gain first.
Held less than 365 days
Short holding periods get the higher rate. These are the figures the estimator returns when the disposal date is inside a year of acquisition.
| Net gain | Rate applied | Tax due | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 32.5% | $325 | $675 |
| $5,000 | 32.5% | $1,625 | $3,375 |
| $10,000 | 32.5% | $3,250 | $6,750 |
| $25,000 | 32.5% | $8,125 | $16,875 |
| $50,000 | 32.5% | $16,250 | $33,750 |
| $100,000 | 32.5% | $32,500 | $67,500 |
Held 365 days or more
Once the year boundary is crossed the estimator switches to the long-term rate for the whole gain.
| Net gain | Rate applied | Tax due | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 16.25% | $163 | $838 |
| $5,000 | 16.25% | $813 | $4,188 |
| $10,000 | 16.25% | $1,625 | $8,375 |
| $25,000 | 16.25% | $4,063 | $20,938 |
| $50,000 | 16.25% | $8,125 | $41,875 |
| $100,000 | 16.25% | $16,250 | $83,750 |
Worked example at $25,000
A position bought for $10,000 and sold for $35,000 leaves a net gain of $25,000. Sold inside a year, Australia takes $8,125, leaving $16,875. Past the 365-day mark the bill is $4,063. Fees come off the gain before the rate is applied, so a 0.1% fee on each leg of a $35,000 exit trims about $70 from the taxable amount and, at 32.5%, about $23 from the bill.
Rules this page follows
- Only individuals and trusts get the 50% discount — companies do not, and the estimator assumes an individual.
- Every disposal is a separate CGT event with its own acquisition date, even when the coins were bought in the same place.
- Gains below zero are treated as zero for the tax line, and the loss is reported separately rather than netted against other income.
- A custom rate overrides the table entirely — useful when you already know your marginal band.

Frequently asked questions
How is the holding period measured in Australia?
The estimator counts calendar days between acquisition and disposal and switches jurisdiction at 365. The discount needs 365 days of ownership; the estimator flips to the discounted rate exactly at that boundary.
What happens to a losing year?
Taxable gain is floored at zero, so a loss produces a tax figure of zero rather than a refund. Some jurisdictions let that loss offset other gains or carry forward; the estimator does not model those rules, which is why the table above stops at the flat rate.
